Health Cooperation in the Barents Region
The official health cooperation in the Barents region is managed by the Working Group on health and social issues. This group meets regularly and brings together governments, regions, organizations and experts in health and related social issues. The joint aim is to improve public health and social well-being of the people in the Barents Region.

Programs
Co-operation Programme on Health and Related Social Issues in the Barents Euro-Arctic Region 2008-2011
Since 1999 WGHS have been working with the implementation of the Barents Health Cooperation Programs. The region of Arkhangelsk and the government of Sweden are currently co-chairing the group. The Program for 2008-2011 was endorsed by the Ministers for Foreign Affairs in November 2007.
The Barents HIV/AIDS Programme
In February 2005, the Working Group on Health and Social related issues adopted a sub-programme, the Barents HIV/AIDS Programme. The programme has been important in the coordination and strengthening of the international efforts in the fight against HIV and AIDS in the region.
Children and Youth at Risk (CYAR)
A very important step was taken at the Working Group’s meeting in Arkhangelsk in March 2008 when a decision was taken to establish the sub-program Children and Youth at Risk (CYAR) (Russian version) and to elect a steering committee for the program.
Financing of projects
The Norwegian ministry of Health and Care services
The Norwegian ministry of Health and Care services allocate grants to health and social related project in the Barents area. In the 2008-2011 period the priorities are prevention and combat of communicable diseases, prevention of lifestyle-related health, social problems and support to children and youth at risk and development of primary health care, public health and social services.
The program pays special attention to three targets groups:
- Vulnerable groups
- Indigenous people
- People in sparsely populated areas

The Norwegian Barents Secretariat's health fund
The Norwegian Barents Secretariat and the Norwegian Ministry of Health and Care Services have established the Barents Secretariats Health Fund to stimulate to new project cooperation between institutions and organisations in Norway and Northwest Russia.
The Fund is established to grant support to regional small-size projects within the field of health and social-related issues. The maximum limit of single-project funding is 75 000 Norwegian kroner (NOK).
